CVE-2026-85985·MariaDB vulnerability
MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. From 10.6.1 until 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2, the CONNECT engine plugin file-access UDFs json_file(), bson_file(), jfile_make(), bfile_make(), and jbin_file() are affected because each does not enforce FILE privilege or the secure_file_priv setting. A low-privileged attacker can trigger the issue by calling a CONNECT file-access UDF with a filesystem path, then invoke a CONNECT file-access UDF to access a filesystem path and read or write files that the database account is not authorized to access, subject to operating-system permissions. This issue is fixed in versions 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2.

How likely is exploitation
FIRST's Exploit Prediction Scoring System puts the probability of this CVE being exploited in the next 30 days at 0.45% — higher than 39% of all published CVEs. EPSS is an independent forecast of exploitation, not a severity rating: it says nothing about how much damage a successful attack does, which is what a CVSS score measures.

How to fix this CVE
Update MariaDB to version 11.8.9 or later to patch a privilege bypass vulnerability in the CONNECT engine's file-access functions. These UDFs (json_file, bson_file, jfile_make, bfile_make, jbin_file) were not properly validating FILE privileges or secure_file_priv settings, allowing unauthorized file read/write operations. Immediately patch all affected MariaDB instances to prevent privilege escalation attacks.
sudo dnf update mariadb-serverDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Check installed MariaDB version with: mysql --version or mariadb --version
- Step 2: Query the database for CONNECT engine status: SELECT * FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.ENGINES WHERE ENGINE='CONNECT';
- Step 3: Search MariaDB error logs for calls to vulnerable UDF functions: grep -E 'json_file|bson_file|jfile_make|bfile_make|jbin_file' /var/log/mysql/error.log
- Step 4: Verify patched version is installed by confirming MariaDB version is 11.8.9 or later: SELECT VERSION();
FAQ
What is CVE-2026-85985?
A privilege bypass vulnerability in MariaDB's CONNECT engine plugin where file-access UDF functions fail to validate FILE privileges or respect secure_file_priv restrictions, enabling low-privileged users to read or write arbitrary files accessible to the database process.
Is CVE-2026-85985 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not currently listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and no public exploits are known to be available.
What versions of MariaDB are affected by CVE-2026-85985?
Vulnerable versions include 10.6.1 through 10.6.27, 10.11.0 through 10.11.18, 11.4.0 through 11.4.12, 11.8.0 through 11.8.8, 12.3.0 through 12.3.2, and all versions before 13.0.2.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2026-85985?
Run: mariadb --version and compare output to affected ranges. If your version is lower than the patched versions (10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, or 13.0.2), you are vulnerable.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2026-85985?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If MariaDB is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2026-85985 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
