CVE-2026-64448·Kernel vulnerability

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: restrict implied bcc[0] exemption to responses without data area smb2_check_message() has a long-standing quirk that accepts a response whose calculated length is one byte larger than the bytes actually received ("server can return one byte more due to implied bcc[0]"). This was introduced to accommodate servers that omit the trailing bcc[0] overlap byte when no data area is present. However, the exemption is applied unconditionally, regardless of whether the command actually carries a data area (has_smb2_data_area[]). When a response with a data area is subject to the +1 exemption, the reported data can extend one byte beyond the bytes actually received, yet smb2_check_message() still accepts it. The subsequent decoder then reads past the end of the receive buffer. This is reachable during NEGOTIATE and SESSION_SETUP, before the session is established. The resulting out-of-bounds reads are visible under KASAN when mounting against a non-conforming server; both the SPNEGO/negTokenInit and the NTLMSSP challenge decoders are affected: BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in asn1_ber_decoder+0x16a7/0x1b00 Read of size 1 at addr ffff8880084d67c0 by task mount.cifs/81 CPU: 1 UID: 0 PID: 81 Comm: mount.cifs Not tainted 7.1.0-rc6 #1 Call Trace: <TASK> dump_stack_lvl+0x4e/0x70 print_report+0x157/0x4c9 kasan_report+0xce/0x100 asn1_ber_decoder+0x16a7/0x1b00 decode_negTokenInit+0x19/0x30 SMB2_negotiate+0x31d9/0x4c90 cifs_negotiate_protocol+0x1f2/0x3f0 cifs_get_smb_ses+0x93f/0x17e0 cifs_mount_get_session+0x7f/0x3a0 cifs_mount+0xb4/0xcf0 cifs_smb3_do_mount+0x23a/0x1500 smb3_get_tree+0x3b0/0x630 vfs_get_tree+0x82/0x2d0 fc_mount+0x10/0x1b0 path_mount+0x50d/0x1de0 __x64_sys_mount+0x20b/0x270 do_syscall_64+0xee/0x590 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x77/0x7f </TASK> Allocated by task 85: kmem_cache_alloc_noprof+0x106/0x380 mempool_alloc_noprof+0x116/0x1e0 cifs_small_buf_get+0x31/0x80 allocate_buffers+0x10d/0x2b0 cifs_demultiplex_thread+0x1d5/0x1d50 kthread+0x2c6/0x390 ret_from_fork+0x36e/0x5a0 ret_from_fork_asm+0x1a/0x30 The buggy address is located 0 bytes to the right of allocated 448-byte region [ffff8880084d6600, ffff8880084d67c0) which belongs to the cache cifs_small_rq of size 448 BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in kmemdup_noprof+0x36/0x50 Read of size 329 at addr ffff88800726c678 by task mount.cifs/89 CPU: 0 UID: 0 PID: 89 Comm: mount.cifs Tainted: G B 7.1.0-rc6 #1 Call Trace: <TASK> dump_stack_lvl+0x4e/0x70 print_report+0x157/0x4c9 kasan_report+0xce/0x100 kasan_check_range+0x10f/0x1e0 __asan_memcpy+0x23/0x60 kmemdup_noprof+0x36/0x50 decode_ntlmssp_challenge+0x457/0x680 SMB2_sess_auth_rawntlmssp_negotiate+0x6f0/0xcb0 SMB2_sess_setup+0x219/0x4f0 cifs_setup_session+0x248/0xaf0 cifs_get_smb_ses+0xf79/0x17e0 cifs_mount_get_session+0x7f/0x3a0 cifs_mount+0xb4/0xcf0 cifs_smb3_do_mount+0x23a/0x1500 smb3_get_tree+0x3b0/0x630 vfs_get_tree+0x82/0x2d0 fc_mount+0x10/0x1b0 path_mount+0x50d/0x1de0 __x64_sys_mount+0x20b/0x270 do_syscall_64+0xee/0x590 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x77/0x7f </TASK> Allocated by task 93: kmem_cache_alloc_noprof+0x106/0x380 mempool_alloc_noprof+0x116/0x1e0 cifs_small_buf_get+0x31/0x80 allocate_buffers+0x10d/0x2b0 cifs_demultiplex_thread+0x1d5/0x1d50 kthread+0x2c6/0x390 ret_from_fork+0x36e/0x5a0 ret_from_fork_asm+0x1a/0x30 The buggy address is located 120 bytes inside of allocated 448-byte region [ffff88800726c600, ffff88800726c7c0) which belongs to the cache cifs_small_rq of size 448 Restrict the +1 exemption to responses that have no data area, so that it still covers the bcc[0] omission it was meant for. How likely is exploitation

FIRST's Exploit Prediction Scoring System puts the probability of this CVE being exploited in the next 30 days at 0.63% — higher than 49% of all published CVEs. EPSS is an independent forecast of exploitation, not a severity rating: it says nothing about how much damage a successful attack does, which is what a CVSS score measures.

Read the two together. CVE-2026-64448 scores 8.2 on CVSS, so a successful attack would be serious — but at 0.63%, almost nobody is currently attempting it. That is a different situation from a flaw under mass exploitation, and it is usually the difference between patching on your next maintenance window and patching tonight.

How to fix this CVE

Update your Linux kernel to version 7.1.4 or later to patch a buffer overread vulnerability in SMB client message validation. The issue allows non-conforming SMB servers to trigger out-of-bounds reads during NEGOTIATE and SESSION_SETUP phases, potentially exposing sensitive data or causing denial of service. Apply the security update immediately, especially if your systems mount SMB/CIFS shares.

sudo dnf update kernel kernel-devel

Defensia detects this vulnerability

How to check if you are affected

  1. Check installed kernel version: uname -r (vulnerable if 6.19.x through 7.1.3)
  2. Verify SMB client is configured: grep -i cifs /etc/fstab or mount | grep cifs
  3. Check dmesg for KASAN errors: dmesg | grep -i 'KASAN\|slab-out-of-bounds\|asn1_ber_decoder'
  4. Confirm patch applied: grep -i 'smb2_check_message' /boot/config-$(uname -r) && uname -r (should show 7.1.4 or later)

CVE-2026-63795CVSS 10In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: 9p: avoid putting oldfid in p9_client_walk() error path When p9_client_walk() is called with clone set to false, fid aliases oldfid. If the walk subsequently fails after the request has been sent, the error path jumps to clunk_fid, which currently calls p9_fid_put(fid) unconditionally. This drops a reference to oldfid even though ownership of oldfid remains with the caller. If this is the last reference, oldfid can be clunked and destroyed while the caller still expects it to be valid. A later use or put of oldfid can then trigger a use-after-free or refcount underflow. Fix this by only putting fid in the clunk_fid error path when it does not alias oldfid, matching the existing guard in the error path below. This can be triggered when a multi-component walk is split into multiple p9_client_walk() calls and a later non-cloning walk fails. A reproducer and refcount warning logs are available on request.
CVE-2026-53246CVSS 9.8In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sctp: validate cached peer INIT chunk length in COOKIE_ECHO processing When a listening SCTP server processes a COOKIE_ECHO chunk, the cached peer INIT chunk embedded after the cookie is parsed and its parameters are later walked by sctp_process_init() using sctp_walk_params(). However, the chunk header length of this cached INIT chunk was not validated against the remaining buffer in the COOKIE_ECHO payload. If the length field is inflated, the parameter walk can run beyond the actual received data, leading to out-of-bounds reads and potential memory corruption during later parameter handling (e.g. STATE_COOKIE processing and kmemdup() copies). Add a bounds check in sctp_unpack_cookie() to ensure the cached INIT chunk length does not exceed the available data in the COOKIE_ECHO buffer before it is used.
CVE-2026-64125CVSS 9.8In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: bcmgenet: keep RBUF EEE/PM disabled Setting RBUF_EEE_EN | RBUF_PM_EN in RBUF_ENERGY_CTRL breaks the RX path on GENET hardware once MAC EEE becomes active. RX traffic stops flowing while the link stays up and the usual descriptor/RX error counters remain quiet. In that state the MAC still accepts frames (rbuf_ovflow_cnt keeps climbing) but RBUF no longer forwards them to DMA, so rx_packets is no longer incremented at the netdev level. On some boards the corruption ends up as a paging fault in skb_release_data via bcmgenet_rx_poll on an LPI exit. Reproduced on Pi 4B (BCM2711 + BCM54213PE) and confirmed by Florian Fainelli on an internal Broadcom 4908-family board with the same crash signature. RBUF_PM_EN is not publicly documented. This shows up more often now that phy_support_eee() enables EEE by default, but it also affects older kernels as soon as TX LPI is turned on via ethtool, so it is not specific to recent changes. Always clear RBUF_EEE_EN | RBUF_PM_EN in bcmgenet_eee_enable_set so the bits stay off across resets. UMAC and TBUF setup is left alone so TX-side EEE keeps working.
CVE-2026-53399CVSS 9.8In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfsd: release layout stid on setlease failure nfs4_alloc_stid() publishes the new stid into cl->cl_stateids via idr_alloc_cyclic() under cl_lock before returning to nfsd4_alloc_layout_stateid(). When nfsd4_layout_setlease() then fails, the error path frees the layout stateid directly with kmem_cache_free() without ever calling idr_remove(), leaving the IDR slot pointing at freed slab memory. Any subsequent IDR walker (states_show, client teardown) dereferences the dangling pointer. The correct teardown for an IDR-published stid is nfs4_put_stid(), which removes the IDR slot under cl_lock, dispatches sc_free (nfsd4_free_layout_stateid) to release ls->ls_file via nfsd4_close_layout(), and drops the nfs4_file reference in its tail. A second issue blocks that switch: nfsd4_free_layout_stateid() unconditionally inspects ls->ls_fence_work via delayed_work_pending() under ls_lock, but INIT_DELAYED_WORK(&ls->ls_fence_work, ...) currently runs only after the setlease call. On the setlease-failure path the destructor would touch an uninitialized delayed_work. nfsd4_alloc_layout_stateid() nfs4_alloc_stid() /* idr_alloc_cyclic under cl_lock */ nfsd4_layout_setlease() /* fails */ nfs4_put_stid() nfsd4_free_layout_stateid() delayed_work_pending(&ls->ls_fence_work) /* needs INIT */ nfsd4_close_layout() /* nfsd_file_put(ls->ls_file) */ put_nfs4_file() Fix by hoisting the ls_fenced / ls_fence_delay / INIT_DELAYED_WORK initialization above the nfsd4_layout_setlease() call, and replace the manual nfsd_file_put + put_nfs4_file + kmem_cache_free cleanup with a single nfs4_put_stid(stp).
CVE-2026-53384CVSS 9.8In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: serial: 8250_dw: unregister 8250 port if clk_notifier_register() fails dw8250_probe() registers the 8250 port via serial8250_register_8250_port() and then, if the device has a clock, registers a clock notifier. If clk_notifier_register() fails, probe returns the error but leaves the 8250 port registered. The matching serial8250_unregister_port() lives in dw8250_remove(), which is not called when probe fails, so the port slot stays occupied until the device is rebound or the system is rebooted. The devm-allocated driver data is freed while the port still references it (via the saved private_data and serial_in/serial_out callbacks), so any access to that port slot before a rebind is a use-after-free hazard. Unregister the port on the clk_notifier_register() error path.
