CVE-2026-53399·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfsd: release layout stid on setlease failure nfs4_alloc_stid() publishes the new stid into cl->cl_stateids via idr_alloc_cyclic() under cl_lock before returning to nfsd4_alloc_layout_stateid(). When nfsd4_layout_setlease() then fails, the error path frees the layout stateid directly with kmem_cache_free() without ever calling idr_remove(), leaving the IDR slot pointing at freed slab memory. Any subsequent IDR walker (states_show, client teardown) dereferences the dangling pointer. The correct teardown for an IDR-published stid is nfs4_put_stid(), which removes the IDR slot under cl_lock, dispatches sc_free (nfsd4_free_layout_stateid) to release ls->ls_file via nfsd4_close_layout(), and drops the nfs4_file reference in its tail. A second issue blocks that switch: nfsd4_free_layout_stateid() unconditionally inspects ls->ls_fence_work via delayed_work_pending() under ls_lock, but INIT_DELAYED_WORK(&ls->ls_fence_work, ...) currently runs only after the setlease call. On the setlease-failure path the destructor would touch an uninitialized delayed_work. nfsd4_alloc_layout_stateid() nfs4_alloc_stid() /* idr_alloc_cyclic under cl_lock */ nfsd4_layout_setlease() /* fails */ nfs4_put_stid() nfsd4_free_layout_stateid() delayed_work_pending(&ls->ls_fence_work) /* needs INIT */ nfsd4_close_layout() /* nfsd_file_put(ls->ls_file) */ put_nfs4_file() Fix by hoisting the ls_fenced / ls_fence_delay / INIT_DELAYED_WORK initialization above the nfsd4_layout_setlease() call, and replace the manual nfsd_file_put + put_nfs4_file + kmem_cache_free cleanup with a single nfs4_put_stid(stp).

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 7.1.3 or later to resolve a critical memory safety issue in the NFSv4 layout state handling code. The vulnerability stems from improper cleanup of layout state identifiers when lease setup fails, potentially leading to use-after-free conditions. Ensure all systems running kernel versions 6.19 through 7.1.2 are patched immediately.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check kernel version: uname -r — Verify if version is between 6.19 and 7.1.2 (vulnerable range)
- Confirm NFSv4 server is enabled: grep -i nfsd /proc/filesystems && ps aux | grep nfsd — Ensure nfsd processes are running
- Monitor kernel logs for memory corruption: dmesg | grep -i 'use-after-free\|use after free\|kernel panic' — Look for signs of stale pointer dereferences
- Verify the fix: uname -r | grep -E '7\.1\.3|7\.2|8\.' — Confirm kernel is updated to patched version
FAQ
What is CVE-2026-53399?
This critical vulnerability affects the Linux kernel's NFSv4 layout state management, where improper error handling during lease initialization leaves freed memory pointers in the state ID registry, allowing subsequent kernel code to dereference dangling memory and trigger use-after-free conditions.
Is CVE-2026-53399 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not currently listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and no public exploits are available, though the critical CVSS 9.8 score warrants immediate patching.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2026-53399?
Linux kernel versions 6.19 through 7.1.2 are vulnerable; the fix is included in 7.1.3 and later releases.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2026-53399?
Run `uname -r` and compare against the affected range 6.19-7.1.2; if your version falls within this range and you operate an NFSv4 server (check with `ps aux | grep nfsd`), your system requires immediate patching.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2026-53399?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed kernel package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server running versions 6.19-7.1.2, CVE-2026-53399 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
