CVE-2026-64232·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: block: recompute nr_integrity_segments in blk_insert_cloned_request blk_insert_cloned_request() already recomputes nr_phys_segments against the bottom queue, because "the queue settings related to segment counting may differ from the original queue." The exact same reasoning applies to integrity segments: a stacked driver's underlying queue can have tighter virt_boundary_mask, seg_boundary_mask, or max_segment_size than the top queue, in which case blk_rq_count_integrity_sg() against the bottom queue produces a different count than the cached rq->nr_integrity_segments inherited from the source request by blk_rq_prep_clone(). When the cached count is lower than the bottom queue's actual count, blk_rq_map_integrity_sg() trips BUG_ON(segments > rq->nr_integrity_segments); on dispatch. The same families of stacked setups that motivated the existing nr_phys_segments recompute -- dm-multipath fanning out to nvme-rdma in particular -- can produce this. Mirror the nr_phys_segments handling: when the request carries integrity, recompute nr_integrity_segments against the bottom queue and reject the request if it exceeds the bottom queue's max_integrity_segments. blk_rq_count_integrity_sg() and queue_max_integrity_segments() are both already available via <linux/blk-integrity.h>, which blk-mq.c includes. This closes a latent gap in the stacking contract and brings the integrity-segment accounting in line with the existing phys-segment accounting.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 7.0.11 or later to patch a critical block I/O layer vulnerability affecting stacked storage drivers. This vulnerability can cause kernel panics or data corruption when using device mapper configurations with NVMe-RDma backends. Perform a kernel upgrade followed by a system reboot to fully apply the security fix.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-devel && sudo rebootDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check kernel version with: uname -r (vulnerable if output shows version between 6.19 and 7.0.10)
- Verify block I/O integrity segment handling with: cat /proc/config.gz | gunzip | grep CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INTEGRITY (if enabled, system is at risk)
- Monitor dmesg for kernel BUG_ON messages: sudo dmesg | grep -i 'segments > rq->nr_integrity_segments' or 'block: recompute'
- After patching, confirm new kernel is running: uname -r (should show 7.0.11 or later)
FAQ
What is CVE-2026-64232?
This is a critical kernel vulnerability in the block I/O layer where stacked storage drivers (like device mapper) fail to recompute integrity segment counts when requests are passed to underlying queues with stricter boundary constraints. This causes a kernel panic with BUG_ON when the actual segment count exceeds the cached value.
Is CVE-2026-64232 being actively exploited?
No. This vulnerability is not listed on the CISA KEV catalog and has no known public exploits. However, it can be triggered accidentally by storage workloads using dm-multipath with NVMe-RDma backends.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2026-64232?
Linux kernel versions 6.19 through 7.0.10 are vulnerable. The fix was backported and released in version 7.0.11 and later.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2026-64232?
Run 'uname -r' and check if your kernel version falls between 6.19 and 7.0.10. If using device mapper or NVMe-based storage, your risk is higher. Confirm with 'cat /proc/config.gz | gunzip | grep CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INTEGRITY' to see if integrity checking is compiled in.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2026-64232?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2026-64232 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
