CVE-2026-64162·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: idpf: fix read_dev_clk_lock spinlock init in idpf_ptp_init() In idpf_ptp_init(), read_dev_clk_lock is initialized after ptp_schedule_worker() had already been called (and after idpf_ptp_settime64() could reach the lock). The PTP aux worker fires immediately upon scheduling and can call into idpf_ptp_read_src_clk_reg_direct(), which takes spin_lock(&ptp->read_dev_clk_lock) on an uninitialized lock, triggering the lockdep "non-static key" warning: [12973.796587] idpf 0000:83:00.0: Device HW Reset initiated [12974.094507] INFO: trying to register non-static key. ... How likely is exploitation
FIRST's Exploit Prediction Scoring System puts the probability of this CVE being exploited in the next 30 days at 0.35% — higher than 27% of all published CVEs. EPSS is an independent forecast of exploitation, not a severity rating: it says nothing about how much damage a successful attack does, which is what a CVSS score measures.
Read the two together. CVE-2026-64162 scores 9.8 on CVSS, so a successful attack would be serious — but at 0.35%, almost nobody is currently attempting it. That is a different situation from a flaw under mass exploitation, and it is usually the difference between patching on your next maintenance window and patching tonight.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 7.0.11 or later to resolve a critical spinlock initialization race condition in the idpf PTP driver. This vulnerability allows a PTP worker thread to access an uninitialized lock, causing system instability and lockdep warnings. Apply the kernel update immediately as this affects a wide range of kernel versions from 6.19 through 7.0.10.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check installed kernel version: uname -r
- Verify if idpf driver is loaded: lsmod | grep idpf
- Search kernel logs for lockdep warnings: dmesg | grep -i 'non-static key' || journalctl -b | grep -i 'non-static key'
- Confirm the fix by checking if kernel version is 7.0.11 or later: uname -r | awk -F'.' '{print ($1>7 || ($1==7 && $2>0) || ($1==7 && $2==0 && $3>=11)) ? "PATCHED" : "VULNERABLE"}'
- Check if PTP hardware is in use: ethtool -T eth0 2>/dev/null | grep -i ptp
FAQ
What is CVE-2026-64162?
CVE-2026-64162 is a critical race condition in the Linux kernel's idpf (Intel Data Plane Development Kit) PTP (Precision Time Protocol) driver where a spinlock is accessed before initialization, causing system instability and kernel warnings.
Is CVE-2026-64162 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2026-64162 is not listed on the CISA KEV catalog and has no known public exploits. However, the critical CVSS 9.8 score warrants immediate patching due to its potential for system compromise and denial of service.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2026-64162?
Linux kernel versions 6.19 through 7.0.10 are vulnerable. Version 7.0.11 and later contain the fix.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2026-64162?
Run 'uname -r' and compare your kernel version to 7.0.11. If your version is between 6.19 and 7.0.10 and the idpf driver is loaded (verify with 'lsmod | grep idpf'), your system is vulnerable.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2026-64162?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2026-64162 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
