CVE-2025-21729·Kernel vulnerability

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: rtw89: fix race between cancel_hw_scan and hw_scan completion The rtwdev->scanning flag isn't protected by mutex originally, so cancel_hw_scan can pass the condition, but suddenly hw_scan completion unset the flag and calls ieee80211_scan_completed() that will free local->hw_scan_req. Then, cancel_hw_scan raises null-ptr-deref and use-after-free. Fix it by moving the check condition to where protected by mutex. How to fix this CVE

Update your Linux kernel to version 6.13.2 or later to resolve a critical race condition in the RTW89 WiFi driver that can cause null pointer dereference and use-after-free errors. This vulnerability occurs when WiFi hardware scan operations are cancelled while completion handlers are still executing, leading to potential kernel crashes. Immediate patching is recommended for all systems running affected kernel versions.

sudo dnf update kernel kernel-headers kernel-devel

Defensia detects this vulnerability

How to check if you are affected

  1. Check your kernel version with: uname -r — verify if it falls in the 6.13.0 to 6.13.1 range
  2. Identify if RTW89 WiFi driver is loaded: lsmod | grep rtw89 — if output appears, the vulnerable driver may be active
  3. Search kernel logs for race condition indicators: sudo dmesg | grep -i 'null.*ptr\|use.*after.*free\|rtw89' — look for null pointer dereference or use-after-free messages
  4. Verify patch application after update: uname -r — confirm kernel version is 6.13.2 or higher, then reboot if necessary

FAQ

What is CVE-2025-21729?

This vulnerability is a race condition in the RTW89 WiFi driver's hardware scan functionality where an unprotected scanning flag allows the cancel operation to proceed while the completion handler simultaneously clears the flag and frees memory, resulting in null pointer dereference or use-after-free conditions that can crash the kernel.

Is CVE-2025-21729 being actively exploited?

No, this vulnerability is not listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and no public exploits are currently available. However, the race condition can be triggered through local WiFi scan operations, making it a concern for system stability.

What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2025-21729?

Linux kernel versions 6.13.0 through 6.13.1 are vulnerable. The fix is included in kernel 6.13.2 and later releases.

How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2025-21729?

Run 'uname -r' and check if the output shows kernel version 6.13.0 or 6.13.1; also verify the RTW89 driver is loaded with 'lsmod | grep rtw89'. If both conditions are met, your system is vulnerable.

Does Defensia detect CVE-2025-21729?

Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2025-21729 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.

CVE-2026-43501CVSS 9.8In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv6: rpl: reserve mac_len headroom when recompressed SRH grows ipv6_rpl_srh_rcv() decompresses an RFC 6554 Source Routing Header, swaps the next segment into ipv6_hdr->daddr, recompresses, then pulls the old header and pushes the new one plus the IPv6 header back. The recompressed header can be larger than the received one when the swap reduces the common-prefix length the segments share with daddr (CmprI=0, CmprE>0, seg[0][0] != daddr[0] gives the maximum +8 bytes). pskb_expand_head() was gated on segments_left == 0, so on earlier segments the push consumed unchecked headroom. Once skb_push() leaves fewer than skb->mac_len bytes in front of data, skb_mac_header_rebuild()'s call to: skb_set_mac_header(skb, -skb->mac_len); will store (data - head) - mac_len into the u16 mac_header field, which wraps to ~65530, and the following memmove() writes mac_len bytes ~64KiB past skb->head. A single AF_INET6/SOCK_RAW/IPV6_HDRINCL packet over lo with a two segment type-3 SRH (CmprI=0, CmprE=15) reaches headroom 8 after one pass; KASAN reports a 14-byte OOB write in ipv6_rthdr_rcv. Fix this by expanding the head whenever the remaining room is less than the push size plus mac_len, and request that much extra so the rebuilt MAC header fits afterwards.
CVE-2026-64397CVSS 9.8In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: serialize QUERY_DIRECTORY requests per file smb2_query_dir() stores a pointer to its stack-allocated private data in the ksmbd_file readdir_data. Concurrent QUERY_DIRECTORY requests using the same file handle can overwrite this pointer while an iterate_dir() callback is still using it, resulting in a stack use-after-free. Add a per-file mutex and hold it while accessing the shared directory enumeration state. The lock covers scan restart, dot entry state, readdir_data setup and iteration, and response construction. This prevents another request from replacing readdir_data.private before the current request has finished using it and also serializes the shared file position.
CVE-2026-64386CVSS 9.8In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: fix query_info() replay double-free A response-bearing attempt can return a replayable error and free its response buffer. If SMB2_query_info_init() fails before the next send, cleanup retains the previous buffer type and frees that response again. Reset response bookkeeping before each attempt to prevent the stale free.
CVE-2026-63993CVSS 9.8In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vxlan: do not reuse cached ip_hdr() value after skb_tunnel_check_pmtu() skb_tunnel_check_pmtu() can change skb->head. Reusing old_iph afer skb_tunnel_check_pmtu() can cause an UAF. Use instead ip_hdr(skb) as done in drivers/net/bareudp.c and drivers/net/geneve.c. Found by Sashiko.
CVE-2026-52986CVSS 9.8In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nf_conntrack_sip: don't use simple_strtoul Replace unsafe port parsing in epaddr_len(), ct_sip_parse_header_uri(), and ct_sip_parse_request() with a new sip_parse_port() helper that validates each digit against the buffer limit, eliminating the use of simple_strtoul() which assumes NUL-terminated strings. The previous code dereferenced pointers without bounds checks after sip_parse_addr() and relied on simple_strtoul() on non-NUL-terminated skb data. A port that reaches the buffer limit without a trailing character is also rejected as malformed. Also get rid of all simple_strtoul() usage in conntrack, prefer a stricter version instead. There are intentional changes: - Bail out if number is > UINT_MAX and indicate a failure, same for too long sequences. While we do accept 05535 as port 5535, we will not accept e.g. 'sip:10.0.0.1:005060'. While its syntactically valid under RFC 3261, we should restrict this to not waste cycles when presented with malformed packets with 64k '0' characters. - Force base 10 in ct_sip_parse_numerical_param(). This is used to fetch 'expire=' and 'rports='; both are expected to use base-10. - In nf_nat_sip.c, only accept the parsed value if its within the 1k-64k range. - epaddr_len now returns 0 if the port is invalid, as it already does for invalid ip addresses. This is intentional. nf_conntrack_sip performs lots of guesswork to find the right parts of the message to parse. Being stricter could break existing setups. Connection tracking helpers are designed to allow traffic to pass, not to block it. Based on an earlier patch from Jenny Guanni Qu <qguanni@gmail.com>.
