CVE-2025-14177·PHP vulnerability
In PHP versions:8.1.* before 8.1.34, 8.2.* before 8.2.30, 8.3.* before 8.3.29, 8.4.* before 8.4.16, 8.5.* before 8.5.1, the getimagesize() function may leak uninitialized heap memory into the APPn segments (e.g., APP1) when reading images in multi-chunk mode (such as via php://filter). This occurs due to a bug in php_read_stream_all_chunks() that overwrites the buffer without advancing the pointer, leaving tail bytes uninitialized. This may lead to information disclosure of sensitive heap data and affect the confidentiality of the target server.

How to fix this CVE
Update PHP to version 8.4.16 or later to patch a memory disclosure vulnerability in the getimagesize() function. This vulnerability can leak sensitive heap memory when processing images through certain stream wrappers, potentially exposing confidential server data. Ensure all PHP instances in your environment are updated to the fixed version.
sudo dnf update phpDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Run `php -v` to check the installed PHP version and confirm if it falls within the affected range (8.4.0 to 8.4.15)
- Review your application code for calls to getimagesize() with php://filter or multi-chunk stream wrappers that could trigger the vulnerability
- Search application and web server logs for getimagesize() function calls combined with php://filter stream wrapper usage patterns
- After patching, re-run `php -v` to confirm PHP has been updated to version 8.4.16 or later
FAQ
What is CVE-2025-14177?
CVE-2025-14177 is a memory disclosure vulnerability in PHP's getimagesize() function that unintentionally exposes uninitialized heap memory when processing images via certain stream handlers, potentially revealing sensitive server data to attackers.
Is CVE-2025-14177 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2025-14177 is not currently listed as actively exploited in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, and no public exploits have been released.
