CVE-2024-49992·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/stm: Avoid use-after-free issues with crtc and plane ltdc_load() calls functions drm_crtc_init_with_planes(), drm_universal_plane_init() and drm_encoder_init(). These functions should not be called with parameters allocated with devm_kzalloc() to avoid use-after-free issues [1]. Use allocations managed by the DRM framework. How likely is exploitation
FIRST's Exploit Prediction Scoring System puts the probability of this CVE being exploited in the next 30 days at <0.1% — higher than 3% of all published CVEs. EPSS is an independent forecast of exploitation, not a severity rating: it says nothing about how much damage a successful attack does, which is what a CVSS score measures.
Read the two together. CVE-2024-49992 scores 7.8 on CVSS, so a successful attack would be serious — but at <0.1%, almost nobody is currently attempting it. That is a different situation from a flaw under mass exploitation, and it is usually the difference between patching on your next maintenance window and patching tonight.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.11.3 or later to resolve a use-after-free vulnerability in the STM DRM display driver. This issue occurs when kernel memory management functions improperly handle graphics plane and CRTC initialization, potentially leading to kernel crashes or privilege escalation. Apply the kernel update through your distribution's package manager and reboot to activate the patched kernel.

How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Check installed kernel version with `uname -r` and compare against 6.11.3 — versions 6.11 through 6.11.2 are vulnerable.
- Step 2: Verify STM DRM driver is loaded on your system by running `lsmod | grep stm` or checking `/sys/module/drm_stm` exists.
- Step 3: Search kernel logs for use-after-free errors related to drm/stm with `dmesg | grep -i 'use-after-free\|drm\|stm'` or `journalctl -p err | grep -E '(drm|stm|UAF)'`.
- Step 4: After applying the update, reboot and confirm the new kernel version with `uname -r` to ensure 6.11.3 or later is running.
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-49992?
CVE-2024-49992 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's STM DRM (display) driver where graphics objects (CRTC and planes) are incorrectly deallocated by the kernel's device management subsystem, potentially causing memory corruption and system crashes.
Is CVE-2024-49992 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2024-49992 is not listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and has no publicly available exploits as of the last update.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-49992?
Kernel versions 6.11 through 6.11.2 are vulnerable. Version 6.11.3 and all later kernel versions include the fix.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-49992?
Run `uname -r` to retrieve your kernel version. If it reports 6.11.0, 6.11.1, or 6.11.2 and your system uses the STM DRM driver, your system is vulnerable and requires a kernel update.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-49992?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-49992 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
