CVE-2024-49969·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Fix index out of bounds in DCN30 color transformation This commit addresses a potential index out of bounds issue in the `cm3_helper_translate_curve_to_hw_format` function in the DCN30 color management module. The issue could occur when the index 'i' exceeds the number of transfer function points (TRANSFER_FUNC_POINTS). The fix adds a check to ensure 'i' is within bounds before accessing the transfer function points. If 'i' is out of bounds, the function returns false to indicate an error. drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/../display/dc/dcn30/dcn30_cm_common.c:180 cm3_helper_translate_curve_to_hw_format() error: buffer overflow 'output_tf->tf_pts.red' 1025 <= s32max drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/../display/dc/dcn30/dcn30_cm_common.c:181 cm3_helper_translate_curve_to_hw_format() error: buffer overflow 'output_tf->tf_pts.green' 1025 <= s32max drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/../display/dc/dcn30/dcn30_cm_common.c:182 cm3_helper_translate_curve_to_hw_format() error: buffer overflow 'output_tf->tf_pts.blue' 1025 <= s32max

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.11.3 or later to patch an index out of bounds vulnerability in AMD display driver's color transformation logic. This buffer overflow in the DCN30 color management module could allow local privilege escalation on systems with AMD GPUs. Apply the patch immediately to systems running kernel versions 6.11 through 6.11.2.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check current kernel version: uname -r — verify if output is between 6.11 and 6.11.2 (inclusive)
- Check if AMD GPU drivers are loaded: lspci | grep -i amd && lsmod | grep amdgpu — confirms DCN30 component exposure
- Search kernel logs for color transformation errors: grep -i 'cm3_helper\|transfer_func\|color' /var/log/kern.log — look for buffer-related warnings or crashes
- Verify fix installation: uname -r should show 6.11.3 or later after reboot following kernel update
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-49969?
CVE-2024-49969 is a buffer overflow vulnerability in the Linux kernel's AMD display driver color transformation function that can be exploited by local users with basic privileges to escalate access and modify system data on systems with AMD GPUs.
Is CVE-2024-49969 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not currently listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and no public exploits are available, though the high CVSS score warrants prompt patching.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-49969?
Linux kernel versions 6.11, 6.11.1, and 6.11.2 are affected; the vulnerability is patched in kernel version 6.11.3 and later.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-49969?
Run `uname -r` and check if the output matches 6.11.x where x is 0-2; additionally verify AMD GPU presence with `lspci | grep AMD` to confirm the vulnerable component is in use.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-49969?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-49969 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
