CVE-2024-49865·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/xe/vm: move xa_alloc to prevent UAF Evil user can guess the next id of the vm before the ioctl completes and then call vm destroy ioctl to trigger UAF since create ioctl is still referencing the same vm. Move the xa_alloc all the way to the end to prevent this. v2: - Rebase (cherry picked from commit dcfd3971327f3ee92765154baebbaece833d3ca9)

How likely is exploitation
FIRST's Exploit Prediction Scoring System puts the probability of this CVE being exploited in the next 30 days at <0.1% — higher than 8% of all published CVEs. EPSS is an independent forecast of exploitation, not a severity rating: it says nothing about how much damage a successful attack does, which is what a CVSS score measures.
Read the two together. CVE-2024-49865 scores 7.8 on CVSS, so a successful attack would be serious — but at <0.1%, almost nobody is currently attempting it. That is a different situation from a flaw under mass exploitation, and it is usually the difference between patching on your next maintenance window and patching tonight.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.11.3 or later to remediate CVE-2024-49865, a use-after-free vulnerability in the DRM/xe virtual machine subsystem. This vulnerability allows local attackers with standard user privileges to trigger a kernel crash or potential code execution by racing the VM creation and destruction ioctls. Ensure all systems running kernel versions 6.8 through 6.11.2 are patched immediately.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check installed kernel version: uname -r — verify if version is between 6.8 and 6.11.2 (vulnerable range)
- Confirm DRM/xe driver is loaded: lsmod | grep xe — if output is empty, the vulnerable component is not active
- Search system logs for UAF or segmentation fault indicators: sudo grep -i 'segfault\|use-after-free\|kernel panic' /var/log/kern.log /var/log/messages
- After patching, reboot and verify: uname -r — confirm kernel version is 6.11.3 or later
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-49865?
CVE-2024-49865 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's DRM/xe (Intel graphics) virtual machine subsystem. An attacker can predict the VM ID before creation completes and destroy it while the creation operation still holds a reference, leading to memory corruption.
Is CVE-2024-49865 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2024-49865 is not currently listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and no public exploits are available as of the disclosure date.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-49865?
Linux kernel versions 6.8 through 6.11.2 are vulnerable. The vulnerability has been patched in version 6.11.3 and later stable releases.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-49865?
Run `uname -r` to display your kernel version. If the output shows a version between 6.8 and 6.11.2 (inclusive), your system is vulnerable. Additionally, verify DRM/xe support with `lsmod | grep xe` — vulnerability only affects systems with the DRM/xe driver loaded.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-49865?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server running version 6.8–6.11.2, CVE-2024-49865 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
