CVE-2024-47697·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drivers: media: dvb-frontends/rtl2830: fix an out-of-bounds write error Ensure index in rtl2830_pid_filter does not exceed 31 to prevent out-of-bounds access. dev->filters is a 32-bit value, so set_bit and clear_bit functions should only operate on indices from 0 to 31. If index is 32, it will attempt to access a non-existent 33rd bit, leading to out-of-bounds access. Change the boundary check from index > 32 to index >= 32 to resolve this issue.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.11.2 or later to patch an out-of-bounds memory write vulnerability in the RTL2830 DVB frontend driver. This issue affects media device handling when PID filter indices exceed valid bounds. Systems running affected kernel versions 6.11 through 6.11.1 should prioritize this update, especially if using digital television tuners or media streaming applications.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Check installed kernel version with `uname -r` and compare against 6.11 to 6.11.1 range
- Step 2: Verify if RTL2830 driver is loaded with `lsmod | grep rtl2830` or check `/sys/module/rtl2830` existence
- Step 3: Search kernel logs for DVB/media errors using `dmesg | grep -i 'rtl2830\|dvb\|out.of.bounds'` or check `/var/log/kern.log`
- Step 4: Confirm patch applied by running `uname -r` and verifying kernel version is 6.11.2 or later
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-47697?
A kernel memory safety vulnerability in the RTL2830 DVB frontend driver where PID filter array bounds checking is insufficient, allowing out-of-bounds writes to 32-bit bitfield operations. This occurs when filter index reaches 32 or higher, exceeding the valid 0-31 range.
Is CVE-2024-47697 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and no public exploits are currently available. However, it remains a high-severity memory corruption issue requiring patching.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-47697?
Linux kernel versions 6.11 through 6.11.1 are affected. The vulnerability was introduced and subsequently fixed in the 6.11.2 stable release.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-47697?
Run `uname -r` to check your kernel version. If output shows 6.11.0 or 6.11.1, your system is vulnerable. Additionally, check if DVB/media drivers are in use with `lsmod | grep dvb`.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-47697?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel package is detected on a monitored server, CVE-2024-47697 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
