CVE-2024-42228·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu: Using uninitialized value *size when calling amdgpu_vce_cs_reloc Initialize the size before calling amdgpu_vce_cs_reloc, such as case 0x03000001. V2: To really improve the handling we would actually need to have a separate value of 0xffffffff.(Christian)

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.9.9 or later to resolve this uninitialized variable vulnerability in the AMD GPU video codec engine. This flaw could allow local users with limited privileges to trigger memory corruption through improper resource handling. Apply the kernel patch immediately if you rely on AMD GPU acceleration.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Check installed kernel version with `uname -r` and compare against 6.9.9
- Step 2: Verify AMD GPU driver presence with `lspci | grep -i amd` and `lsmod | grep amdgpu`
- Step 3: Search kernel logs for uninitialized value warnings with `dmesg | grep -i 'vce\|amdgpu' | grep -i 'uninit\|null\|unset'`
- Step 4: After patching, reboot and confirm new kernel version with `uname -r` showing 6.9.9 or later
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-42228?
This vulnerability exists in the AMD GPU video codec engine (VCE) command stream validator, where a size variable is used without initialization in certain opcode paths, potentially leading to memory corruption and privilege escalation from unprivileged local accounts.
Is CVE-2024-42228 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and no public exploit code is currently available.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-42228?
Linux kernel versions 6.7 through 6.9.8 are affected; the fix is included in kernel 6.9.9 and later.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-42228?
Run `uname -r` to display your kernel version; if it shows 6.7.x through 6.9.8, your system is vulnerable. Additionally, confirm AMD GPU presence with `lspci | grep -i amd`.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-42228?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-42228 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
