CVE-2024-41061·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Fix array-index-out-of-bounds in dml2/FCLKChangeSupport [Why] Potential out of bounds access in dml2_calculate_rq_and_dlg_params() because the value of out_lowest_state_idx used as an index for FCLKChangeSupport array can be greater than 1. [How] Currently dml2 core specifies identical values for all FCLKChangeSupport elements. Always use index 0 in the condition to avoid out of bounds access.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.9.11 or later to resolve an array bounds checking vulnerability in the AMD display driver's FCLK change support logic. This flaw could allow local attackers with moderate privileges to trigger memory access violations. Apply the kernel update through your distribution's package manager and reboot to activate the patched version.
sudo dnf check-update kernel && sudo dnf update kernel && sudo rebootDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Check your current kernel version by running: uname -r
- Step 2: Verify if you are running kernel 6.7 through 6.9.10 (vulnerable range) by comparing output against the affected versions list
- Step 3: Check kernel logs for array index errors related to dml2 or FCLKChangeSupport: sudo journalctl -k | grep -i 'fclk\|dml2\|index'
- Step 4: After patching, confirm kernel updated to 6.9.11+ by running: uname -r and verify no dml2-related array errors appear in dmesg
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-41061?
This vulnerability exists in the Linux kernel's AMD display driver subsystem where the dml2 core improperly validates array indices when accessing the FCLKChangeSupport array, potentially allowing out-of-bounds memory access that could crash the system or enable privilege escalation.
Is CVE-2024-41061 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not currently listed on CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and no public exploits are available, though local attackers with user-level access could potentially trigger it.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-41061?
Linux kernel versions 6.7 through 6.9.10 are affected; version 6.9.11 and later contain the fix.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-41061?
Run: uname -r — if the output shows kernel version between 6.7 and 6.9.10, your system is vulnerable and requires immediate patching.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-41061?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-41061 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
