CVE-2024-40903·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: typec: tcpm: fix use-after-free case in tcpm_register_source_caps There could be a potential use-after-free case in tcpm_register_source_caps(). This could happen when: * new (say invalid) source caps are advertised * the existing source caps are unregistered * tcpm_register_source_caps() returns with an error as usb_power_delivery_register_capabilities() fails This causes port->partner_source_caps to hold on to the now freed source caps. Reset port->partner_source_caps value to NULL after unregistering existing source caps.

How likely is exploitation
FIRST's Exploit Prediction Scoring System puts the probability of this CVE being exploited in the next 30 days at <0.1% — higher than 2% of all published CVEs. EPSS is an independent forecast of exploitation, not a severity rating: it says nothing about how much damage a successful attack does, which is what a CVSS score measures.
Read the two together. CVE-2024-40903 scores 7.8 on CVSS, so a successful attack would be serious — but at <0.1%, almost nobody is currently attempting it. That is a different situation from a flaw under mass exploitation, and it is usually the difference between patching on your next maintenance window and patching tonight.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.9.6 or later to resolve a use-after-free vulnerability in the USB Type-C Power Delivery (TCPM) subsystem. This bug occurs when invalid source capabilities are advertised and the registration process fails, leaving a dangling pointer in kernel memory. Apply the kernel update immediately, especially on systems with USB Type-C port functionality.

How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Check current kernel version with `uname -r` and compare against 6.9.6 (vulnerable if 6.9.0-6.9.5)
- Step 2: Verify USB Type-C subsystem is active with `lsmod | grep typec` to confirm the TCPM module is loaded
- Step 3: Search kernel logs for use-after-free errors with `dmesg | grep -i 'use-after-free\|use after free\|UAF'` or `journalctl -k | grep -i 'use-after-free'`
- Step 4: After patching, verify the new kernel version is running with `uname -r` and reboot if necessary: `sudo reboot`
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-40903?
CVE-2024-40903 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's USB Type-C Power Delivery Threat Model (TCPM) driver. When invalid source capabilities are advertised and the registration fails, a freed memory pointer is not cleared, potentially allowing local privilege escalation.
Is CVE-2024-40903 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2024-40903 is not listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, and no public exploits are currently available. However, the high CVSS score (7.8) warrants prompt patching.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-40903?
Linux kernel versions 6.9.0 through 6.9.5 are vulnerable. Version 6.9.6 and later contain the fix.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-40903?
Run `uname -r` and check if the output is between 6.9.0 and 6.9.5; if so, your system is vulnerable. Additionally, confirm USB Type-C support is enabled with `lsmod | grep typec`.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-40903?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-40903 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
