CVE-2024-38590·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/hns: Modify the print level of CQE error Too much print may lead to a panic in kernel. Change ibdev_err() to ibdev_err_ratelimited(), and change the printing level of cqe dump to debug level.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.9.3 or later to resolve this denial-of-service vulnerability in the RDMA/hns driver. The fix reduces excessive error logging that could trigger kernel panics under high error conditions. Systems running kernel versions 6.9 through 6.9.2 should prioritize this update, particularly those utilizing InfiniBand or RoCE networking.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-devel && sudo rebootDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check installed kernel version: uname -r
- Verify if RDMA/hns driver is loaded: lsmod | grep hns
- Review kernel logs for excessive CQE error messages: dmesg | grep -i 'cqe\|rdma' | tail -100
- Confirm kernel update: Compare output of uname -r with target version 6.9.3 or later
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-38590?
This is a denial-of-service vulnerability in the Linux kernel's RDMA/hns driver where excessive error logging from completion queue events (CQE) can cause kernel panics. The fix implements rate-limited error messages and moves detailed logging to debug level.
Is CVE-2024-38590 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and no public exploits are currently available.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-38590?
Linux kernel versions 6.9 through 6.9.2 are vulnerable. Version 6.9.3 and later include the fix.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-38590?
Run 'uname -r' to display your kernel version. If the output shows 6.9.0, 6.9.1, or 6.9.2, you are vulnerable. Additionally, check if the hns driver is in use with 'lsmod | grep hns'.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-38590?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-38590 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
