CVE-2024-38552·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Fix potential index out of bounds in color transformation function Fixes index out of bounds issue in the color transformation function. The issue could occur when the index 'i' exceeds the number of transfer function points (TRANSFER_FUNC_POINTS). The fix adds a check to ensure 'i' is within bounds before accessing the transfer function points. If 'i' is out of bounds, an error message is logged and the function returns false to indicate an error. How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.9.3 or later to resolve a buffer overflow vulnerability in the AMD display color transformation function. This vulnerability could allow local attackers with user-level privileges to cause a denial of service or potentially execute arbitrary code by triggering out-of-bounds memory access in the display driver's color curve processing.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Check your kernel version by running: uname -r
- Step 2: Verify if AMD GPU display driver is loaded by running: lspci -k | grep -i 'amd\|display'
- Step 3: Search for color transformation errors in kernel logs using: sudo dmesg | grep -i 'cm_helper_translate_curve\|color\|transfer'
- Step 4: After updating, reboot and confirm new kernel version with: uname -r (should be 6.9.3 or higher)
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-38552?
This vulnerability is a buffer overflow in the AMD display driver's color transformation function that fails to validate array indices before accessing transfer function point arrays, potentially allowing local privilege escalation or denial of service.
Is CVE-2024-38552 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and no public exploits are currently available.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-38552?
Linux kernel versions 6.9 through 6.9.2 are vulnerable; kernel 6.9.3 and later versions contain the fix.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-38552?
Run 'uname -r' and verify your kernel version is below 6.9.3. If it returns 6.9.0, 6.9.1, or 6.9.2, your system is vulnerable. Additionally check if AMD GPU hardware is present with 'lspci | grep AMD'.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-38552?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-38552 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
