CVE-2024-26974·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: qat - resolve race condition during AER recovery During the PCI AER system's error recovery process, the kernel driver may encounter a race condition with freeing the reset_data structure's memory. If the device restart will take more than 10 seconds the function scheduling that restart will exit due to a timeout, and the reset_data structure will be freed. However, this data structure is used for completion notification after the restart is completed, which leads to a UAF bug. This results in a KFENCE bug notice. BUG: KFENCE: use-after-free read in adf_device_reset_worker+0x38/0xa0 [intel_qat] Use-after-free read at 0x00000000bc56fddf (in kfence-#142): adf_device_reset_worker+0x38/0xa0 [intel_qat] process_one_work+0x173/0x340 To resolve this race condition, the memory associated to the container of the work_struct is freed on the worker if the timeout expired, otherwise on the function that schedules the worker. The timeout detection can be done by checking if the caller is still waiting for completion or not by using completion_done() function.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.8.3 or later to resolve a use-after-free vulnerability in the QAT crypto driver's AER recovery mechanism. This flaw can cause kernel panics when PCI error recovery takes longer than expected. Apply the kernel security update immediately using your distribution's package manager, then reboot the system to activate the patched kernel.
sudo dnf check-update kernel && sudo dnf update kernel && sudo rebootDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check installed kernel version: uname -r — verify it is 6.8.3 or later
- Check if Intel QAT device is present: lspci | grep -i qat — if no results, the vulnerable component is not exposed
- Search kernel logs for AER recovery events: sudo dmesg | grep -i 'aer\|pci.*recovery' — look for timeouts or completion failures
- Verify patch application: grep -i 'adf_device_reset_worker' /boot/config-$(uname -r) — confirm UAF fix is compiled into running kernel
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-26974?
This is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's QAT (QuickAssist Technology) crypto driver that occurs during PCI AER (Advanced Error Reporting) recovery. If device restart exceeds 10 seconds, a timeout frees the reset_data structure prematurely, but the worker thread still tries to access it for completion notification, causing a kernel crash or memory corruption.
Is CVE-2024-26974 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and no public exploits are available. However, it can be triggered locally by systems with Intel QAT devices experiencing PCI errors.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-26974?
Linux kernel versions 6.8 through 6.8.2 are vulnerable. The vulnerability was resolved in kernel 6.8.3 and later.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-26974?
Run 'uname -r' and verify the version is 6.8.2 or earlier. Then run 'lspci | grep -i qat' — if an Intel QAT device is present and the kernel is vulnerable, you are at risk.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-26974?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-26974 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
