CVE-2023-52788·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i915/perf: Fix NULL deref bugs with drm_dbg() calls When i915 perf interface is not available dereferencing it will lead to NULL dereferences. As returning -ENOTSUPP is pretty clear return when perf interface is not available. [tursulin: added stable tag] (cherry picked from commit 36f27350ff745bd228ab04d7845dfbffc177a889)

How to fix this CVE
Update the Linux kernel to version 6.6.3 or later to resolve NULL pointer dereference issues in the i915 GPU driver's performance monitoring interface. Systems running kernel versions 6.6 through 6.6.2 should prioritize this patch to prevent potential denial-of-service conditions when the perf interface is accessed on unsupported hardware configurations.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check current kernel version: uname -r
- Verify if i915 driver is loaded: lsmod | grep i915
- Review system logs for perf-related errors: journalctl -b | grep -i 'i915\|perf\|null'
- Confirm patch application by checking kernel commit: git log --oneline | grep -i '36f27350ff745bd228ab04d7845dfbffc177a889'
FAQ
What is CVE-2023-52788?
This vulnerability involves a NULL pointer dereference in the Intel i915 GPU driver's performance monitoring subsystem. When certain debugging functions attempt to access the perf interface on incompatible hardware, the kernel fails to properly validate the interface availability, leading to a crash.
Is CVE-2023-52788 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and no public exploits are available. However, local privilege escalation is theoretically possible if combined with other vectors.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2023-52788?
Linux kernel versions 6.6.0 through 6.6.2 are affected. The vulnerability was patched in version 6.6.3 and later releases.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2023-52788?
Run 'uname -r' to check your kernel version. If it reports 6.6.0, 6.6.1, or 6.6.2, your system is vulnerable. Additionally, verify i915 driver presence with 'lsmod | grep i915'.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2023-52788?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2023-52788 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
