CVE-2022-49076·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/hfi1: Fix use-after-free bug for mm struct Under certain conditions, such as MPI_Abort, the hfi1 cleanup code may represent the last reference held on the task mm. hfi1_mmu_rb_unregister() then drops the last reference and the mm is freed before the final use in hfi1_release_user_pages(). A new task may allocate the mm structure while it is still being used, resulting in problems. One manifestation is corruption of the mmap_sem counter leading to a hang in down_write(). Another is corruption of an mm struct that is in use by another task.

How likely is exploitation
FIRST's Exploit Prediction Scoring System puts the probability of this CVE being exploited in the next 30 days at <0.1% — higher than 6% of all published CVEs. EPSS is an independent forecast of exploitation, not a severity rating: it says nothing about how much damage a successful attack does, which is what a CVSS score measures.
Read the two together. CVE-2022-49076 scores 7.8 on CVSS, so a successful attack would be serious — but at <0.1%, almost nobody is currently attempting it. That is a different situation from a flaw under mass exploitation, and it is usually the difference between patching on your next maintenance window and patching tonight.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 5.17.3 or later to address a critical memory management bug in the RDMA/hfi1 subsystem. This vulnerability can cause memory corruption and system hangs when processes using high-speed RDMA fabric interfaces terminate abnormally. Immediate patching is recommended for systems running kernel versions 5.17.0 through 5.17.2.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Check your kernel version with `uname -r` and verify if it falls between 5.17.0 and 5.17.2
- Step 2: Confirm hfi1 driver is loaded by running `lsmod | grep hfi1`; if empty, the vulnerable code path is not active
- Step 3: Search system logs for memory corruption indicators using `journalctl -p err --grep='use-after-free\|mm_struct\|mmap_sem' --since='24 hours ago'`
- Step 4: After patching, verify the new kernel version with `uname -r` and confirm it shows 5.17.3 or higher
FAQ
What is CVE-2022-49076?
CVE-2022-49076 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's RDMA/hfi1 InfiniBand driver that occurs during abnormal process termination. When the last reference to a process memory structure is dropped prematurely, the kernel may reuse that freed memory for another task, causing corruption of critical kernel data structures like the mmap semaphore.
Is CVE-2022-49076 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2022-49076 is not listed as actively exploited in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, and no public exploits are currently available. However, it remains a high-severity issue requiring immediate patching due to its potential for local privilege escalation and system instability.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2022-49076?
Kernel versions 5.17.0, 5.17.1, and 5.17.2 are vulnerable. The vulnerability was resolved in kernel 5.17.3 and all subsequent releases.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2022-49076?
Run `uname -r` to check your kernel version. If the output shows 5.17.0, 5.17.1, or 5.17.2, and you have InfiniBand hardware (check with `lspci | grep InfiniBand`), your system is vulnerable.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2022-49076?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2022-49076 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
