CVE-2022-48851·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: staging: gdm724x: fix use after free in gdm_lte_rx() The netif_rx_ni() function frees the skb so we can't dereference it to save the skb->len.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 5.16.15 or later to resolve a use-after-free vulnerability in the gdm724x staging driver. This flaw occurs when the kernel attempts to access skb (socket buffer) metadata after the network stack has already freed the memory, potentially leading to system crashes or kernel panic. Ensure your system receives the patched kernel version through your distribution's update mechanism.

How to check if you are affected
- Check your kernel version: uname -r | grep -E '^5\.16\.(0|1[0-4])($|[-.])'
- Verify if gdm724x driver is loaded: lsmod | grep gdm724x
- Check kernel logs for use-after-free warnings: dmesg | grep -i 'use.*after.*free\|use-after-free'
- Confirm patched kernel is running after reboot: uname -r and verify version is 5.16.15 or higher
FAQ
What is CVE-2022-48851?
This is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's gdm724x staging driver where code attempts to access socket buffer length after the network subsystem has deallocated that memory, causing potential kernel crashes.
Is CVE-2022-48851 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not currently listed as actively exploited in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and no public exploit code is available.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2022-48851?
Kernel versions 5.16.0 through 5.16.14 are affected. The vulnerability was resolved in version 5.16.15.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2022-48851?
Run 'uname -r' and verify the kernel version. If it shows 5.16.x where x is less than 15, and the gdm724x driver is present (lsmod | grep gdm724x), your system is vulnerable.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2022-48851?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2022-48851 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
