CVE-2022-48718·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm: mxsfb: Fix NULL pointer dereference mxsfb should not ever dereference the NULL pointer which drm_atomic_get_new_bridge_state is allowed to return. Assume a fixed format instead.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 5.16.8 or later to resolve a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in the mxsfb display driver. This issue could cause a system crash or denial of service when the kernel attempts to access bridge state information during graphics operations. Kernels between 5.16 and 5.16.7 are affected and should be patched immediately.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check current kernel version: uname -r — verify the build is 5.16.8 or later
- Confirm mxsfb driver is compiled: grep -i mxsfb /boot/config-$(uname -r) — should show CONFIG_DRM_MXSFB=y or =m
- Search system logs for NULL pointer panics: sudo grep -i 'null pointer dereference' /var/log/kern.log /var/log/dmesg | grep mxsfb
- After patching, reboot and verify: uname -r should reflect the new kernel version, and dmesg should show no mxsfb-related panics
FAQ
What is CVE-2022-48718?
This vulnerability is a NULL pointer dereference flaw in the Linux kernel's mxsfb display driver that occurs when the driver fails to validate bridge state information, potentially leading to kernel crashes during graphics mode transitions.
Is CVE-2022-48718 being actively exploited?
No. This vulnerability has not been added to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and no public exploits are available. However, it can be triggered by local users with appropriate privileges.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2022-48718?
Linux kernel versions 5.16 through 5.16.7 are vulnerable. Version 5.16.8 and later contain the fix.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2022-48718?
Run uname -r to check your kernel version. If it reports 5.16.0 through 5.16.7, your system is vulnerable. Additionally, verify mxsfb is enabled with grep CONFIG_DRM_MXSFB /boot/config-$(uname -r).
Does Defensia detect CVE-2022-48718?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2022-48718 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
