CVE-2019-25160·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netlabel: fix out-of-bounds memory accesses There are two array out-of-bounds memory accesses, one in cipso_v4_map_lvl_valid(), the other in netlbl_bitmap_walk(). Both errors are embarassingly simple, and the fixes are straightforward. As a FYI for anyone backporting this patch to kernels prior to v4.8, you'll want to apply the netlbl_bitmap_walk() patch to cipso_v4_bitmap_walk() as netlbl_bitmap_walk() doesn't exist before Linux v4.8.

How likely is exploitation
FIRST's Exploit Prediction Scoring System puts the probability of this CVE being exploited in the next 30 days at <0.1% — higher than 2% of all published CVEs. EPSS is an independent forecast of exploitation, not a severity rating: it says nothing about how much damage a successful attack does, which is what a CVSS score measures.
Read the two together. CVE-2019-25160 scores 7.1 on CVSS, so a successful attack would be serious — but at <0.1%, almost nobody is currently attempting it. That is a different situation from a flaw under mass exploitation, and it is usually the difference between patching on your next maintenance window and patching tonight.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 4.20.15 or later to patch out-of-bounds memory access vulnerabilities in the netlabel subsystem. These flaws affect array boundary checks in cipso_v4_map_lvl_valid() and netlbl_bitmap_walk() functions, potentially allowing local privilege escalation or denial of service. Prioritize this update for systems running kernel versions 4.20.0 through 4.20.14.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Run 'uname -r' to check your current kernel version and confirm if it falls between 4.20.0 and 4.20.14
- Verify netlabel module is loaded with 'lsmod | grep netlabel' — if present, the vulnerable code path is available
- Check kernel logs for memory access violations: 'dmesg | grep -i "out of bounds\|memory\|segfault"' to identify potential exploitation attempts
- After patching, reboot the system and run 'uname -r' again to confirm kernel version is 4.20.15 or later
FAQ
What is CVE-2019-25160?
CVE-2019-25160 is a kernel vulnerability that contains array boundary check flaws in the netlabel subsystem, specifically in functions handling CIPSO IPv4 mapping and bitmap walking operations. These flaws can lead to out-of-bounds memory reads or writes when processing network security labels.
Is CVE-2019-25160 being actively exploited?
No, there is no evidence of active exploitation in the wild according to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, and no public exploit code is available. However, the high CVSS score of 7.1 indicates significant local privilege escalation and denial of service potential.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2019-25160?
Linux kernel versions 4.20.0 through 4.20.14 are vulnerable. Users on kernel 4.20.15 and later, or users on different kernel series (4.19, 5.0+), are not affected by this specific flaw.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2019-25160?
Run 'uname -r' and check if the output shows a kernel version between 4.20.0 and 4.20.14. If yes, your server is vulnerable and requires immediate patching.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2019-25160?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server and its version falls within the vulnerable range, CVE-2019-25160 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
