CVE-2024-7553·PHP vulnerability
Incorrect validation of files loaded from a local untrusted directory may allow local privilege escalation if the underlying operating systems is Windows. This may result in the application executing arbitrary behaviour determined by the contents of untrusted files. This issue affects MongoDB Server v5.0 versions prior to 5.0.27, MongoDB Server v6.0 versions prior to 6.0.16, MongoDB Server v7.0 versions prior to 7.0.12, MongoDB Server v7.3 versions prior 7.3.3, MongoDB C Driver versions prior to 1.26.2 and MongoDB PHP Driver versions prior to 1.18.1. Required Configuration: Only environments with Windows as the underlying operating system is affected by this issue

How to fix this CVE
Update the MongoDB PHP Driver to version 1.18.1 or later to resolve this local privilege escalation vulnerability on Windows systems. The vulnerability stems from improper validation of files loaded from untrusted local directories, which could allow an attacker with local access to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. Affected systems should prioritize this update, particularly Windows-based deployments where the attack surface is exposed.
sudo dnf update php-pecl-mongodbDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Run `php -m | grep mongodb` or `php -i | grep -A 5 'mongo'` to verify the MongoDB PHP Driver is installed and check the version string
- Step 2: Execute `php -r "echo phpversion('mongodb');"` to retrieve the exact installed driver version and compare against 1.18.1
- Step 3: Check Windows event logs for unexpected process creation or privilege escalation events originating from PHP processes, particularly in Security logs (Event ID 4688)
- Step 4: After patching, re-run `php -r "echo phpversion('mongodb');"` to confirm the version is now 1.18.1 or higher
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-7553?
CVE-2024-7553 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the MongoDB PHP Driver where insufficient validation of files loaded from untrusted local directories on Windows systems allows a local attacker to execute arbitrary code with elevated permissions.
Is CVE-2024-7553 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2024-7553 is not listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and no public exploits are currently available, though the high CVSS score (7.3) warrants prompt patching.
What versions of PHP are affected by CVE-2024-7553?
The MongoDB PHP Driver versions prior to 1.18.1 are vulnerable. This affects PHP installations using the pecl-mongodb extension in versions 1.18.0 and earlier.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-7553?
Run `php -r "echo phpversion('mongodb');"` on your server. If the output is a version number lower than 1.18.1, your system is vulnerable. Note: This vulnerability only affects Windows-based servers.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-7553?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the MongoDB PHP Driver is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-7553 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
