CVE-2024-47527·PHP vulnerability
LibreNMS is an open-source, PHP/MySQL/SNMP-based network monitoring system. A Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the "Device Dependencies" feature allows authenticated users to inject arbitrary JavaScript through the device name ("hostname" parameter). This vulnerability can lead to the execution of malicious code in the context of other users' sessions, potentially compromising their accounts and allowing unauthorized actions. This vulnerability is fixed in 24.9.0.

How to fix this CVE
Upgrade LibreNMS to version 24.9.0 or later to patch the stored XSS vulnerability in the Device Dependencies feature. This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts through device hostname fields, which execute in other users' browsers. Immediately apply the patch if you are running LibreNMS versions prior to 24.9.0, especially in environments with multiple administrative users.

What an exploitation attempt looks like
Sample log line indicative of exploitation attempts:
POST|PUT request to /api/v0/devices or /device/dependencies with hostname parameter containing: <script>, javascript:, onerror=, onload=, or other JavaScript event handlers; alternatively, hostnames stored in database containing these patterns when retrieved and rendered without HTML encodingWAF mitigation (if patching is not yet possible)
Add this rule to your WAF to block exploitation attempts while you schedule the patch.
Implement WAF rules to block POST/PUT requests to LibreNMS device endpoints with hostname parameters containing script tags, event handlers (onerror, onload, onclick), or protocol handlers (javascript:, data:). Additionally, enforce HTML entity encoding on all device name outputs in responses. Example signature: (hostname|host).*(<script|javascript:|onerror|onload)How to check if you are affected
- Check LibreNMS version with: grep -r 'VERSION\|version' /opt/librenms/ | grep -i version | head -5 or via the LibreNMS web UI under Admin > System > About
- Verify if Device Dependencies feature is enabled and accessible: Check the database for stored hostnames with suspicious characters using: mysql -u librenms -p librenms -e "SELECT * FROM devices WHERE hostname LIKE '%<script>%' OR hostname LIKE '%javascript:%'"
- Search web server access logs for POST requests to device dependency endpoints: grep -i 'device.*dependency\|hostname' /var/log/apache2/access.log | grep -E 'POST|PUT'
- Confirm the patch by checking if LibreNMS version is 24.9.0 or higher: grep -r 'version.*24\.9' /opt/librenms/ or compare the git commit hash against 36b38a50cc10d4ed16caab92bdc18ed6abac9685
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-47527?
CVE-2024-47527 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in LibreNMS that allows authenticated users to inject malicious JavaScript code through device hostname fields in the Device Dependencies feature. When other users view the affected device, the injected script executes in their browser session, potentially compromising their accounts.
Is CVE-2024-47527 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2024-47527 is not listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and there is no public exploit code available. However, given that it requires authentication and affects a widely-used monitoring tool, proactive patching is still strongly recommended.
What versions of LibreNMS are affected by CVE-2024-47527?
All versions of LibreNMS prior to 24.9.0 are vulnerable. The exact first vulnerable version is unknown, but the vulnerability is confirmed to be patched in version 24.9.0 and later.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-47527?
Run: grep -i version /opt/librenms/VERSION or check the LibreNMS web interface under Admin > System > About. If your version is below 24.9.0, your instance is vulnerable.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-47527?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If LibreNMS is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-47527 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
