CVE-2024-47051·PHP vulnerability
This advisory addresses two critical security vulnerabilities present in Mautic versions before 5.2.3. These vulnerabilities could be exploited by authenticated users. * Remote Code Execution (RCE) via Asset Upload: A Remote Code Execution vulnerability has been identified in the asset upload functionality. Insufficient enforcement of allowed file extensions allows an attacker to bypass restrictions and upload executable files, such as PHP scripts. * Path Traversal File Deletion: A Path Traversal vulnerability exists in the upload validation process. Due to improper handling of path components, an authenticated user can manipulate the file deletion process to delete arbitrary files on the host system.

How to fix this CVE
Upgrade PHP to version 5.2.3 or later to patch two critical vulnerabilities in the asset upload and file deletion mechanisms. These flaws allow authenticated attackers to upload malicious code and delete arbitrary files on the server. Apply the update immediately using your distribution's package manager and restart the PHP service to ensure the fix takes effect.

What an exploitation attempt looks like
Sample log line indicative of exploitation attempts:
POST /app/bundles/AssetBundle/assets/ followed by file upload with .php, .phtml, or other executable extension in Content-Disposition header; or DELETE requests with path traversal sequences (../ or %2e%2e%2f) in the file path parameterWAF mitigation (if patching is not yet possible)
Add this rule to your WAF to block exploitation attempts while you schedule the patch.
Implement file upload restrictions at the WAF level: block any POST requests to asset upload endpoints containing executable extensions (.php, .phtml, .php3, .php4, .php5, .phar, .inc); validate that uploaded files match declared MIME types; block path traversal patterns in all request parameters matching ^.*(\.\.|%2e%2e|%252e%252e)How to check if you are affected
- Check installed PHP version: php -v
- Verify Mautic installation path and version: grep -r '"version"' /path/to/mautic/app/config.php or check /app/release_metadata.json
- Search web server logs for suspicious file uploads to asset directories: grep -i 'POST.*asset' /var/log/apache2/access.log or /var/log/nginx/access.log
- Confirm patch applied by running php -v again and verifying version is 5.2.3 or higher; check file integrity: ls -la /path/to/mautic/app/ | grep -E '(upload|asset)' for unexpected executable files
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-47051?
CVE-2024-47051 comprises two critical security flaws in Mautic versions before 5.2.3 that allow authenticated users to upload executable PHP files by bypassing file extension validation, and to delete arbitrary files through path traversal in the upload validation logic.
Is CVE-2024-47051 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2024-47051 is not currently listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, and no public exploits are available. However, the critical CVSS score of 9.1 makes it a high-priority patch due to its severity.
What versions of PHP are affected by CVE-2024-47051?
All Mautic versions before 5.2.3 are affected. The vulnerability impacts authenticated users, so systems where access controls are not properly configured face greater risk.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-47051?
Run php -v to check your PHP version, then verify your Mautic version by checking the version string in config files or the web interface. If your Mautic version is below 5.2.3, the system is vulnerable.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-47051?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If PHP with Mautic is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-47051 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
