CVE-2023-52757·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: fix potential deadlock when releasing mids All release_mid() callers seem to hold a reference of @mid so there is no need to call kref_put(&mid->refcount, __release_mid) under @server->mid_lock spinlock. If they don't, then an use-after-free bug would have occurred anyways. By getting rid of such spinlock also fixes a potential deadlock as shown below CPU 0 CPU 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------ cifs_demultiplex_thread() cifs_debug_data_proc_show() release_mid() spin_lock(&server->mid_lock); spin_lock(&cifs_tcp_ses_lock) spin_lock(&server->mid_lock) __release_mid() smb2_find_smb_tcon() spin_lock(&cifs_tcp_ses_lock) *deadlock*

How likely is exploitation
FIRST's Exploit Prediction Scoring System puts the probability of this CVE being exploited in the next 30 days at <0.1% — higher than 1% of all published CVEs. EPSS is an independent forecast of exploitation, not a severity rating: it says nothing about how much damage a successful attack does, which is what a CVSS score measures.
Read the two together. CVE-2023-52757 scores 7.8 on CVSS, so a successful attack would be serious — but at <0.1%, almost nobody is currently attempting it. That is a different situation from a flaw under mass exploitation, and it is usually the difference between patching on your next maintenance window and patching tonight.

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.6.3 or later to resolve a critical deadlock vulnerability in the SMB client mid-release mechanism. This vulnerability can cause kernel hangs when concurrent operations access shared locking structures. Ensure systems running kernel versions 6.6 through 6.6.2 are patched immediately, particularly those relying on SMB/CIFS network file sharing.

How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Check current kernel version with 'uname -r' and compare against vulnerable range 6.6.0-6.6.2
- Step 2: Verify SMB/CIFS kernel modules are loaded with 'lsmod | grep cifs'
- Step 3: Search kernel logs for deadlock indicators: 'journalctl -xe | grep -i deadlock' or 'dmesg | grep -i "spinlock\|mid_lock"'
- Step 4: After patching, confirm fixed version with 'uname -r' and verify it shows 6.6.3 or higher
FAQ
What is CVE-2023-52757?
CVE-2023-52757 is a kernel deadlock vulnerability in the Linux SMB client code where improper spinlock management during mid (message ID) release can cause circular lock dependencies between mid_lock and tcp_ses_lock, freezing affected systems.
Is CVE-2023-52757 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and no public exploits are available. However, it can be triggered by local attackers with low privileges.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2023-52757?
Linux kernel versions 6.6.0, 6.6.1, and 6.6.2 are vulnerable. Version 6.6.3 and all subsequent releases contain the fix.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2023-52757?
Run 'uname -r' to display your kernel version. If it returns a version between 6.6.0 and 6.6.2 inclusive, your system is vulnerable. Also confirm CIFS is in use with 'lsmod | grep cifs'.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2023-52757?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2023-52757 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
