CVE-2025-21883·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ice: Fix deinitializing VF in error path If ice_ena_vfs() fails after calling ice_create_vf_entries(), it frees all VFs without removing them from snapshot PF-VF mailbox list, leading to list corruption. Reproducer: devlink dev eswitch set $PF1_PCI mode switchdev ip l s $PF1 up ip l s $PF1 promisc on sleep 1 echo 1 > /sys/class/net/$PF1/device/sriov_numvfs sleep 1 echo 1 > /sys/class/net/$PF1/device/sriov_numvfs Trace (minimized): list_add corruption. next->prev should be prev (ffff8882e241c6f0), but was 0000000000000000. Move the removing to ice_free_vf_entries(), which is also being called in other places where VFs are being removed (including ice_free_vfs() itself).

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.13.6 or later to resolve a memory corruption vulnerability in the Intel ice driver's SR-IOV virtual function initialization. This vulnerability manifests when enabling SR-IOV VFs fails partway through the configuration process, leaving dangling references in the mailbox list. Apply the kernel update immediately, especially if you are using Intel ice-based network adapters with SR-IOV capabilities.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Run 'uname -r' to check your installed kernel version; if it is between 6.13.0 and 6.13.5, your system is vulnerable.
- Check if the ice driver is loaded by running 'lsmod | grep ice'; if present, your network adapter uses the affected driver.
- Review dmesg logs for 'ice_sriov_configure' or 'ice_mbx_init_vf_info' entries followed by list corruption errors: 'dmesg | grep -A5 "list_add corruption"'
- After applying the kernel update, reboot and verify the new version with 'uname -r' to confirm it is 6.13.6 or higher.
FAQ
What is CVE-2025-21883?
CVE-2025-21883 is a kernel memory corruption vulnerability in the Intel ice SR-IOV driver where failed virtual function initialization leaves VF objects in an inconsistent mailbox list state, causing kernel panic or use-after-free conditions during subsequent SR-IOV configuration attempts.
Is CVE-2025-21883 being actively exploited?
No. This vulnerability is not listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, and no public exploits are currently available. However, it can be reliably triggered through intentional SR-IOV misconfiguration.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2025-21883?
Linux kernel versions 6.13.0 through 6.13.5 are affected. The vulnerability is fixed in kernel 6.13.6 and later.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2025-21883?
Run 'uname -r' and check if your kernel version falls between 6.13.0 and 6.13.5. Additionally, verify if the ice driver is in use with 'lsmod | grep ice'.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2025-21883?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server running version 6.13.0–6.13.5, CVE-2025-21883 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
