This wasn't a problem at the begining because __patch_mem() is not instrumented. Commit 465cabc97b42 ("powerpc/code-patching: introduce patch_instructions()") use copy_to_kernel_nofault() to copy several instructions at once. But when using temporary mm the destination is not regular kernel memory but a kind of kernel-like memory located in user address space. ---truncated---

How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.13.5 or later to resolve this KASAN memory access violation that occurs during kernel code patching operations. This fix disables KASAN reports during temporary memory mapping operations on PowerPC systems, preventing false-positive security warnings that could cause system instability. Apply the kernel update through your distribution's package manager and reboot to complete the remediation.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Step 1: Check current kernel version with 'uname -r' and verify it is 6.13.5 or later
- Step 2: Confirm PowerPC architecture with 'uname -m' or 'grep -i power /proc/cpuinfo' to determine if system is affected
- Step 3: Search kernel logs for KASAN errors during BPF operations: 'sudo dmesg | grep -A5 'BUG: KASAN: user-memory-access'
- Step 4: Verify patch was applied by checking for the fix commit: 'git log --oneline | grep -i 'KASAN report during patching' or cross-reference kernel source version with git.kernel.org commits
FAQ
What is CVE-2025-21869?
CVE-2025-21869 is a memory access violation in the Linux kernel's PowerPC code-patching mechanism where KASAN (Kernel Address Sanitizer) incorrectly reports valid accesses to temporary kernel memory as user-memory violations during BPF JIT compilation and instruction patching.
Is CVE-2025-21869 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2025-21869 is not listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and no public exploits are available. This is a local memory safety issue affecting system stability rather than a direct security threat.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2025-21869?
Linux kernel versions 6.13 through 6.13.4 are affected. The vulnerability is fixed in version 6.13.5 and later.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2025-21869?
Run 'uname -r' to check your kernel version. If it shows 6.13.0 through 6.13.4 and your system has PowerPC architecture (check with 'uname -m' showing 'ppc64' or 'ppc64le'), your system is vulnerable.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2025-21869?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2025-21869 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
