CVE-2025-21858·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: geneve: Fix use-after-free in geneve_find_dev(). syzkaller reported a use-after-free in geneve_find_dev() [0] without repro. geneve_configure() links struct geneve_dev.next to net_generic(net, geneve_net_id)->geneve_list. The net here could differ from dev_net(dev) if IFLA_NET_NS_PID, IFLA_NET_NS_FD, or IFLA_TARGET_NETNSID is set. When dev_net(dev) is dismantled, geneve_exit_batch_rtnl() finally calls unregister_netdevice_queue() for each dev in the netns, and later the dev is freed. However, its geneve_dev.next is still linked to the backend UDP socket netns. Then, use-after-free will occur when another geneve dev is created in the netns. Let's call geneve_dellink() instead in geneve_destroy_tunnels(). How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.13.5 or later to remediate CVE-2025-21858, a use-after-free vulnerability in the GENEVE tunnel driver. This issue occurs when network namespaces are manipulated during tunnel device creation, potentially allowing memory corruption. Apply the update immediately to systems using kernel versions 6.13.0 through 6.13.4.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check your kernel version by running: uname -r | grep -E '^6\.13\.[0-4]' (returns match if vulnerable)
- Verify GENEVE module is loaded: lsmod | grep geneve (if empty, GENEVE tunnels are not in use)
- List active GENEVE tunnel interfaces: ip link show type geneve (confirms if GENEVE tunnels exist on the system)
- Confirm kernel patch is applied by checking: cat /proc/version | grep -q '6.13.5' && echo 'Patched' || echo 'Vulnerable'
FAQ
What is CVE-2025-21858?
CVE-2025-21858 is a use-after-free memory vulnerability in the Linux kernel's GENEVE tunnel driver. When a GENEVE device is destroyed after being moved to a different network namespace, dangling references remain in the original namespace's tunnel list, causing memory corruption when new tunnels are created.
Is CVE-2025-21858 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2025-21858 is not listed on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and no public exploits are available. However, the vulnerability was discovered through fuzzing and requires privilege to trigger network namespace manipulation.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2025-21858?
Linux kernel versions 6.13.0 through 6.13.4 are affected. Kernel 6.13.5 and later include the fix that properly calls geneve_dellink() during tunnel destruction to prevent use-after-free.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2025-21858?
Run 'uname -r' to check your kernel version. If it shows 6.13.0 through 6.13.4, you are vulnerable. Additionally, confirm GENEVE is in use by running 'lsmod | grep geneve' and 'ip link show type geneve'.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2025-21858?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server running versions 6.13.0-6.13.4, CVE-2025-21858 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
