CVE-2024-53177·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: prevent use-after-free due to open_cached_dir error paths If open_cached_dir() encounters an error parsing the lease from the server, the error handling may race with receiving a lease break, resulting in open_cached_dir() freeing the cfid while the queued work is pending. Update open_cached_dir() to drop refs rather than directly freeing the cfid. Have cached_dir_lease_break(), cfids_laundromat_worker(), and invalidate_all_cached_dirs() clear has_lease immediately while still holding cfids->cfid_list_lock, and then use this to also simplify the reference counting in cfids_laundromat_worker() and invalidate_all_cached_dirs(). Fixes this KASAN splat (which manually injects an error and lease break in open_cached_dir()): ================================================================== BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in smb2_cached_lease_break+0x27/0xb0 Read of size 8 at addr ffff88811cc24c10 by task kworker/3:1/65 CPU: 3 UID: 0 PID: 65 Comm: kworker/3:1 Not tainted 6.12.0-rc6-g255cf264e6e5-dirty #87 Hardware name: VMware, Inc. How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.12.2 or later to resolve a use-after-free vulnerability in the SMB cached directory handling code. This vulnerability occurs when error paths in open_cached_dir() race with lease break notifications, causing premature memory deallocation. Systems running kernel versions 6.12 through 6.12.1 should prioritize this update to prevent potential kernel crashes or memory corruption.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check your current kernel version: uname -r
- Verify if you are running a vulnerable version (6.12.0, 6.12.1, or 6.12.x before 6.12.2): uname -r | grep -E '6\.12\.[0-1]($|[^0-9])'
- Check for KASAN errors in kernel logs related to smb2_cached_lease_break: dmesg | grep -i 'use-after-free\|smb2_cached_lease_break\|open_cached_dir'
- Verify the fix is applied after update: uname -r should show 6.12.2 or later
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-53177?
CVE-2024-53177 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's SMB (Server Message Block) cached directory implementation that occurs when error handling in open_cached_dir() races with incoming lease break notifications, causing the kernel to access freed memory and potentially leading to system crashes or memory corruption.
Is CVE-2024-53177 being actively exploited?
No, CVE-2024-53177 is not currently listed as actively exploited in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, and no public exploits are available. However, it should still be patched promptly due to its high severity rating.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-53177?
Linux kernel versions 6.12.0 through 6.12.1 are affected. The vulnerability has been fixed in kernel version 6.12.2 and later.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-53177?
Run 'uname -r' to display your kernel version. If the output shows 6.12.0, 6.12.1, or any 6.12.x version before 6.12.2, your system is vulnerable and requires an immediate kernel update.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-53177?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-53177 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
