CVE-2024-26625·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: llc: call sock_orphan() at release time syzbot reported an interesting trace [1] caused by a stale sk->sk_wq pointer in a closed llc socket. In commit ff7b11aa481f ("net: socket: set sock->sk to NULL after calling proto_ops::release()") Eric Biggers hinted that some protocols are missing a sock_orphan(), we need to perform a full audit. In net-next, I plan to clear sock->sk from sock_orphan() and amend Eric patch to add a warning. How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 6.7.4 or later to resolve a use-after-free vulnerability in the LLC (Logical Link Control) socket implementation. This issue occurs when socket resources are not properly orphaned during release, leaving stale pointers that can be accessed by network interrupt handlers. Apply the kernel update through your distribution's package manager and reboot your system.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-devel && sudo rebootDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check your current kernel version with: uname -r
- Verify if kernel versions 6.7 through 6.7.3 are installed with: dpkg -l | grep linux-image (Ubuntu/Debian) or rpm -qa | grep kernel (RHEL/CentOS)
- Search system logs for LLC-related kernel panics or KASAN errors: grep -i 'llc\|sock_wfree\|use-after-free' /var/log/kern.log /var/log/messages
- Confirm the patched kernel is running after reboot with: uname -r (should show 6.7.4 or later, or your distro's patched version)
FAQ
What is CVE-2024-26625?
This is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's LLC (Logical Link Control) protocol implementation. When an LLC socket is closed, the kernel fails to properly orphan the socket structure, leaving a dangling pointer that can be dereferenced by network interrupt handlers, potentially causing memory corruption or a denial of service.
Is CVE-2024-26625 being actively exploited?
No, there is no evidence of active exploitation in the wild. This vulnerability was discovered through fuzzing (syzbot) and reported before public exploit code was released.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2024-26625?
Linux kernel versions 6.7 through 6.7.3 are vulnerable. The fix is included in kernel 6.7.4 and later, as well as backports to earlier stable branches.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2024-26625?
Run 'uname -r' and check if the output shows a 6.7.x kernel version between 6.7.0 and 6.7.3. If so, your system is vulnerable. Most distributions have backported this fix to their current kernels even if the base kernel version number appears older.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2024-26625?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If Kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2024-26625 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
