CVE-2022-49722·Kernel vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ice: Fix memory corruption in VF driver Disable VF's RX/TX queues, when it's disabled. VF can have queues enabled, when it requests a reset. If PF driver assumes that VF is disabled, while VF still has queues configured, VF may unmap DMA resources. In such scenario device still can map packets to memory, which ends up silently corrupting it. Previously, VF driver could experience memory corruption, which lead to crash: [ 5119.170157] BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 00001b9780003237 [ 5119.170166] PGD 0 P4D 0 [ 5119.170173] Oops: 0002 [#1] PREEMPT_RT SMP PTI [ 5119.170181] CPU: 30 PID: 427592 Comm: kworker/u96:2 Kdump: loaded Tainted: G W I --------- - - 4.18.0-372.9.1.rt7.166.el8.x86_64 #1 [ 5119.170189] Hardware name: Dell Inc. How to fix this CVE
Update your Linux kernel to version 5.18.6 or later to resolve a critical memory corruption issue in the Intel ice VF driver. The vulnerability occurs when a Virtual Function (VF) maintains active RX/TX queues during a reset while the Physical Function (PF) assumes the VF is disabled, leading to silent memory corruption and potential kernel crashes. Applying this patch ensures proper queue state synchronization between VF and PF drivers.
sudo dnf update kernel kernel-develDefensia detects this vulnerability
How to check if you are affected
- Check your current kernel version: uname -r (confirm if version is below 5.18.6)
- Verify if ice driver is loaded: lsmod | grep ice (exposure exists if ice module is present)
- Search system logs for memory corruption signatures: grep -i 'BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request' /var/log/kern.log or journalctl -xe | grep -i 'paging request'
- Confirm fix installation: uname -r should show 5.18.6 or later; verify with dmesg | grep 'ice' to confirm updated driver version
FAQ
What is CVE-2022-49722?
This vulnerability affects the Intel ice driver in the Linux kernel, where improper queue state management between Virtual Functions and Physical Functions leads to silent memory corruption when VFs are reset with active DMA operations still pending.
Is CVE-2022-49722 being actively exploited?
No, this vulnerability is not listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and no public exploits are known, though it can cause kernel crashes and data corruption in affected virtualized environments.
What versions of Kernel are affected by CVE-2022-49722?
Linux kernel versions 5.5 through 5.18.5 are vulnerable; the fix is available in kernel 5.18.6 and later.
How do I check if my server is vulnerable to CVE-2022-49722?
Run 'uname -r' to get your kernel version and compare it against 5.18.6; if your version is lower, run 'lsmod | grep ice' to check if the affected ice driver is loaded. If both conditions are true, your system is vulnerable.
Does Defensia detect CVE-2022-49722?
Yes — Defensia's CVE advisory scanner compares installed package versions against the NVD database. If the Linux kernel is installed on a monitored server, CVE-2022-49722 will appear in your dashboard with remediation steps.
